Trump Blames Schiff of Sharing Intelligence to Russia; Helping Sanders

On Sunday, February 23, 2020, US President, Donald Trump attacked a Democratic Party representative, Adam Schiff alleging that classified information of the US has been shared to Russia. Trump accused the House Intelligence Chairman, Adam Schiff for not briefing the information that Russia has been trying to interfere in the upcoming 2020 US elections by helping the Democratic presidential front-runner, Senator Bernie Sanders.

Trump’s Attack on Schiff

Ahead of his leaving the White House for a two-day trip India, Trump told reporters that nobody explained to him about the intelligence information that Russia was targeting to help the election campaign of his potential rival candidate, Sanders.

Calling for a probe investigation against Schiff, Trump accused him of leaking US confidential information to Russia. Earlier, a congressional source told Reuters on Friday that intelligence officials have acknowledged that Russia seemed to be involving in disinformation and spreading propaganda for both the candidates, Trump and Sanders.

Trump said in a statement, “I read where Russia is helping Bernie Sanders. Nobody said it to me at all. Nobody briefed me about that at all.” He continued, “They leaked it, Adam Schiff and his group. They leaked it to the papers and – as usual – they ought to investigate Adam Schiff for leaking that information.”

A source told Reuters that Trump attacked Schiff, who was the lead prosecutor in Trump’s impeachment trial in the Senate, without having any evidence to support his claims.

Citing the claim was a Trump’s strategy to repel attention from his own actions, Schiff wrote in a tweet, “Nice deflection, Mr. President. But your false claims fool no one.” He added, “You welcomed Russian help in 2016, tried to coerce Ukraine’s help in 2019, and won’t protect our elections in 2020. Now you fired your intelligent chief for briefing Congress about it. You’ve betrayed America. Again.”

Trump Targets on Sanders’ Democratic Socialist Views

Many analysts suggested that Trump’s decision for removing the acting director of national intelligence, Joseph Maguire and replaced him with US Ambassador to Germany, Richard Grenell last week, was related over the issues of US intelligence findings that Russia intervened to help him in the 2016 presidential election against Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, the former secretary of state.

White House’s National Security Adviser, Robert O’Brien told ABC’s “This Week,” “I haven’t seen any intelligence that Russia is doing anything to attempt to get President Trump re-elected.” The response was against the attack from other administration officials who have claimed that Russia was trying to help Trump again this year.

Sanders, who is now the front-runner for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, is a self-declared democratic socialist. Trump has been waiting for a moment, if Sanders becomes the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate for the upcoming 2020 US election, to hurl his arguments and attacking Democrats for supporting a socialist agenda.

Trump earlier stated that the Democratic Party had been internally divided which was evident in the previous 2016 election that favored Clinton unfairly over Sanders in the primary race, an issue that still divided the Democratic base.

Trump added, “I think what it could be is, you know, the Democrats are treating Bernie Sanders very unfairly and it sounds to me like a leak from Adam Schiff because they don’t want Bernie Sanders to represent them. It sounds like it’s (2016) all over again for Bernie Sanders.”
