Taika Waititi, the director behind Marvel hit Thor: Ragnarok and Oscar-nominated movie Jojo Rabbit is in talks with Lucasfilm and Disney about supervising a future Star Wars movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Disney has many more names to consider!
It seems like the talks are far from final, and it’s not clear how any project in which Waititi is involved would work for the larger scheme of expanding the TV and film universe of Star Wars. However, Waititi, having given a big successful Marvel film and signing off fresh from directing the applauded finale of Disney+ hit The Mandalorian, is certainly a strong candidate to carry the Star Wars torch forward.
Disney and Lucasfilm also require some new and high-profile talent as Game of Thrones showrunners, D.B. Weiss and David Benioff left their Star Wars trilogy to work on Netflix’s exclusive projects. Director of The Last Jedi, Rian Johnson is also supposedly working on a sequel of his Oscar-nominated thriller mystery, Knives Out. That’s why it could have complicated Disney’s plans to provide another trilogy to Johnson. However, the director and writer stated this week that he is still in talks to acquire more Star Wars projects in the future.
In the past, Waititi has closely worked with superstar producer of Marvel and studio president Kevin Feige, who is currently working on his Star Wars movie, after the end of the current Marvel Infinity Saga. Now, the New Zealand filmmaker is also in the range of Jon Favreau, director of the Iron Man and creator and executive producer of The Mandalorian and is now partially in charge of managing the future of Star Wars across the big screen and streaming TV.
All of this would intersect to a point that would result in a fruitful relationship between Waititi and the current brainstormers of the Star Wars universe. He was behind the rejuvenation of the Thor series after its first two mediocre parts, transforming Chris Hemsworth’s character into one of the most dynamic and funny components of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He has paved the path to include Thor for huge roles in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. Disney and Lucasfilm might be looking for the same breeze of fresh air for Star Wars.
Also, Waititi is pre-occupied with many things at the moment. Right now, He is in charge of the current live-action adaptation of the fabulous anime Akira, which is scheduled for release on May 21st, 2021. Moreover, he’s also been reached for the direction of the next movie in the Thor saga, named Love and Thunder, which is due out November 5th, 2021.
It is not clear how Waititi is going to work on yet another enormous media property with this many projects on his plate. Of course, this indicates that the next Star Wars films are going to take some years from now to come out, which is sync with Disney’s strategy to turn its focus to Disney+ following the hectic final installment in the Skywalker saga that got released last month.
