On an extremely rare occasion, the Prince of Wales, Charles’ youngest son Prince Harry was finally relieved from the UK’s royal titles along with his wife, Meghan Markle and their newly-born baby boy, Archie on Saturday, January 18, 2020. The royal couple who held the titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex will embark on a new independent journey and lead a normal life after renouncing the British royal title.
Intense Media Pressure Being a Royal Member
The couple’s decision to renouncing the royal titles in the early week of this month was a complete shock to the royal family. According to the UK’s royal source, the announcement was made after the couple spent a long holiday break in Canada which shattered the queen and other seniors of Windsor.
One key reason as per the TV interview released in October 2019 was that the couple had a hard time dealing with intense media attention and ‘bullying’ being a royal member. Earlier this month, the couple shared a view that they wanted less royal responsibilities and spending more time in North America. Since then, the queen and senior family members had been into a ‘constructive and friendly’ discussions to find a solution for the couple’s views.
As per the statement released by Buckingham Palace on Saturday, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan would lead an independent life and the title of ‘Royal Highness’ would be stripped off from them.
Following Saturday’s announcement, Queen Elizabeth II expressed in a statement issued by the palace, “Harry, Meghan, and Archie will always be much-loved members of my family… I recognize the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the last two years and support their wish for a more independent life.” The queen further added that she was “particularly proud” of Meghan who had become a member of the royal family in May 2018.
Unresolved about Funding for Security and Property
Harry and his American wife will not involve in any royal ceremonial events or tours in future despite they both are likely to retain their titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The BBC’s royal correspondent, Jonny Dymond, asserted, “It is harder to think of a much cleaner break than this. Harry and Meghan are still members of the Royal Family, but they are effectively no longer royal.”
A palace spokeswoman clearly explained that the couple would not receive public money for their personal concerns which brought unclear issues of whether this funding would be used for the maintenance of their cottage in Windsor and security personnel staff. Buckingham Palace had declined to comment on these issues.
The change made in the royal family will come into effect in the spring 2020 but the situation will be reviewed by the royal family including the queen who is Harry’s grandmother, his father Prince Charles and his elder brother Prince William. Under the new arrangement, the couple was relieved from royal duties but it has remained unclear about what would the couple do next. A question was also raised by media whether the couple would continue to use the ‘Sussex Royal’ title for the websites and branding that the couple has been associated with.
The Royal source observed the couple had not yet signed any contracts with commercial agencies and they would be likely to spend time mostly in North America. The palace spokeswoman reaffirmed, “Although they can no longer formally represent the queen, the Sussexes have made clear that everything they do will continue to uphold the values of her majesty.” Concerning the funding for Harry and his family, a royal source mentioned that Harry’s father, Prince Charles would be supporting his son through a private financial help.
