Boeing Employees Revealed Internal Documents on Defective 737 Max

Boeing Co., the American airplane manufacturer, has stormed into another crisis as it revealed hundreds of its employees’ internal messages on Thursday, January 9, 2020, that contained aggressive comments about the development of the 737 max model. Some messages highlighted aggressive comments and contempt towards the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and foreign aviation regulators. The most focal point of the message was directed towards Boing’s cancellation of the simulator training of the pilots.

Boeing’s Going Down History

Boeing’s most popular model, 737 Max has been grounded since March 2019 after two incidents including the Ethiopian Airlines flight crash which led to the killing of 346 people. The airplane company, over 10 months, has been trying to fix its problems that surfaced the aftermath of the two crashes. According to CNBC, Boeing is facing the biggest crisis in its history as the crisis led to the suspension of its former CEO, Dennis Muilenburg, and all 737 Max productions.

The 100 plus pages of the internal message revealed on Thursday that the company’s employees talked about several concerns including the designing flaw of the airline, lack of safety measures, cancellation of simulator training for pilots, bullying regulators, and lax standard. As responding to the latest exposure, Boeing stated that the messages “do not reflect the company we are and need to be, and they are completely unacceptable.”

However, the company recommended in the last week that pilots needed to undergo simulator training before they resume flying the 737 MAX. Referring to the messages’ contents, the FAA said, however, that the messages had not mentioned on new safety concerns although, the administration added, “the tone and content of some of the language contained in the documents are disappointing”. According to Reuters, Senator Roger Wicker, who chairs the commerce committee leading the senate’s probe into Boeing, claimed, “documents raise questions about the efficacy of FAA’s oversight of the certification process.”

Exchange of Conversation Among Employees

After reading the exposed message, Peter DeFazio, Chairman of the House Transportation Committee (HTC), referred, “These newly-released emails are incredibly damning. They paint a deeply disturbing picture of the lengths Boeing was apparently willing to go to evade scrutiny from regulators, flight crews, and the flying public, even as its own employees were sounding alarms internally.” The HTC is now conducting the investigating of the Max after the crisis since March 2019.

Some messages revealed a conversation about the company’s policy on simulator training. A Boeing’s 737 chief technical pilots in March 2017 wrote to another employee, “I want to stress the importance of holding firm that there will not be any type of simulator training required to transition from the [the older model of the 737] to MAX. Boeing will not allow that to happen. We’ll go face to face with any regulator who tries to make that a requirement.”

Another message talked about the bullying foreign regulator saying that India’s aviation regulator “is apparently even stupider” for ordering the model. Some of the employees also mentioned about Boeing’s announcement to remove simulator training from its standard requirement rules before the FAA approved the jets in 2017.

In messages, one Boeing employee told another in April 2017, “This airplane is designed by clowns who in turn are supervised by monkeys.” Another message reads, a Boeing employee asked a colleague in a February 2018 message, “Would you put your family on a MAX simulator-trained aircraft? I wouldn’t.” His coworker replied: “No.”
